The annual walk to promote friendship between China and Japan attracts more than 1,700 Chinese and Japanese over the weekend.
MORE than 1,700 Chinese and Japanese took part in the 6th China-Japan Friendship Walk around the West Lake on Sunday.
Around 400 Japanese were among the walkers, including 40 tourists from Japan, 60 from other cities in China, and the rest Japanese either working or studying in Hangzhou.
The route covered 10.5 kilometers, starting from the No War Again China-Japan Friendship Monument in Liu Lang Wen Ying (Orioles Singing in the Willows) scenic spot, and concluding at Qian Wang Ci (King Qian's Temple).
"The experience of walking around the West Lake is memorable for everyone," says Ishil Tetsuya, deputy consul general of Japan in Shanghai.
"It promotes health, provides beautiful views of the lake and as people talk during the walk they communicate. And this speeds up the understanding between Chinese and Japanese people."
The number of participants has been rising every year since the first walk attracted 300 walkers in 2004.
Every week and every month, the China-Japan Friendship Association of Zhejiang University holds activities. Everyone who speaks Japanese or is interested in Japanese culture is welcome.
