GRADED certificate tests for table tennis are coming to Shanghai — the sport’s equivalent of what piano students have been taking for years.
Test standards released yesterday were compiled by the Shanghai University of Sport under the authorization of Shanghai Education Commission to promote popularization of table tennis, also known as ping pong, and scientific evaluation of players’ skills.
The evaluation system currently includes test standards for table tennis skills in three tiers for juveniles, each with three levels. A fourth tier for professionals is to be developed later.
All the tests, which require players to hit the ball to set areas, will be taken using automatic ball machines and intelligent sensors.
Grades will be given by the system automatically according to the accuracy and speed of the ball.
